Industries Where Asset Monitoring Systems Can Be Used
Asset Monitoring System is useful in industries where real-time monitoring is required. Some of the industries where these systems can be used are as follows:
What Technologies Are Used For Asset Monitoring?
Before we get into the workings of asset monitoring systems, let us first understand which technologies are used for asset monitoring.
Barcode or QR Codes
Barcodes and QR codes contain tags that electronic scanning devices can read. Barcode and OR codes both can be used but they differ in flexibility and capacity. The difference between these two is that the former is one-dimensional, and the latter is two-dimensional. Barcode requires scanning horizontally, whereas QR codes can be scanned from any angle. Furthermore, QR codes transmit more data. For low-volume manual scanning, these technologies are used.
WiFi
WiFi is used for real-time transmission of data. It uses wireless technology, wireless local networks and radio waves to broadcast data of the asset. Installation and maintenance are easy due to standardised infrastructure, but in order for it to work efficiently, good WiFi coverage and speed are required. Otherwise, it can be out of service and less secure.
GPS
Asset monitoring also uses GPS technology to track asset information. Satellites are used to transmit the data, which is automatically collected by the receivers. Using satellites helps in accurate outdoor tracking (helps identify longitude and latitude). Because of accurate location data, it is used to track data of high-value assets or vehicles.
RFID
RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It uses tags to read and transmit data. It also helps in monitoring large high-value assets and is usually used for monitoring warehouse and retail facilities. There are two types of RFID systems: passive and active. Passive systems are battery-free, and Active systems are battery-powered. The former is less expensive as compared to the latter. However, active RFID systems offer a bigger read range than passive RFID systems. This technology helps in theft protection and offers real-time asset visibility.
How Does Asset Monitoring Systems Work?
Three methods can be used to track assets; these methods use barcodes, RFID or GPS technology. Besides this, these three methods can be categorised as active and passive. The three methods are mentioned below:
Theft Protection

Benefits

Theft Protection As asset management systems make use of technologies that offer real-time asset visibility, it becomes easier to track the accurate location of the assets. In addition to this, you can also manage and monitor your assets which helps mitigate risks of theft.
● Tracks Employee Behaviour

Tracks Employee Behaviour

Asset monitoring systems can help track employee behaviour. It includes tracking the travel time, driving style, geographical locations and many more.
Predicts Asset Failure

Predicts Asset Failure

With the use of IoT sensors, anomalies and operation patterns of the assets can be analysed. Further, it can measure KPIs and predict equipment failure. Since asset monitoring systems can predict asset failure, they can help take timely preventive maintenance to avoid failure or unplanned downtime.
Asset Handling Control

Asset Handling Control

Some assets are of high value and require employees to treat them properly. Also, only authorised persons should be able to handle such high-value assets. Asset handling control helps to note if the employees are treating the high-value asset properly. The manager is sent alerts promptly if employees fail to look after such assets.
Extends Asset Life

Extends Asset Life

The asset monitoring system uses sensors to monitor assets, their performance, location, condition, etc. It helps the manager understand if the asset requires any maintenance or repair and also reduces unplanned downtime. As assets are properly monitored and managed, it helps extend the life of an asset.
Tracking

Tracking and Scheduling Maintenance

These systems are able to analyse performance metrics and note if the assets require any schedule or repair. Further, you can set up SMS or email alerts as reminders for scheduled maintenance.
Analyse Asset Data

Analyse Asset Data

With the help of analytics, asset data can be managed and help formulate asset reports. These reports help in analysing the performance of assets and equipment, improve its work, decrease downtime and schedule staff accordingly.
Applications of Asset Monitoring Systems
Geo-Fencing
When you create a virtual circumference for a real-world geographical area, it is called geo-fencing. It offers location-based services that help you get instant alerts if an asset enters this pre-defined geographical area. Geo-fence can be created easily, and you can assign and unassign assets to that geo-fence as per your requirement.
Smart Asset Tracking
With the help of GPS and IoT-based asset tracking, you can easily track the updates of your vehicle. It is developed to provide end-to-end solutions and helps reduce and avoid problems in managing business operations.
Temperature and Humidity Monitoring
In industries, different machines require specific humidity and temperature to function properly. Smart sensors used in asset monitoring systems can help detect the level of humidity and temperature to ensure proper functioning. Furthermore, you can also set threshold limits to take prompt actions if the temperature reduces or increases the set limit.
Real-Time Location Monitoring
Asset monitoring systems help in monitoring and tracking location in real-time. It is done with the help of sensors. These systems also allow the user to filter data quickly and gain insights into the asset you are looking for among multiple assets. Besides this, a secured cloud platform stores this data, making it easier for the user to access the details.
Trailer Monitoring
Asset monitoring systems can be installed on the trailers to gain real-time information and actionable insights. It provides many benefits such as transparency, location traceability, status of the products and easy tracking. It helps in effective and efficient trailer monitoring.
Warehouse Monitoring
To monitor warehouses, asset monitoring systems provide functionalities including tracking real-time data, tracking the temperature, humidity, locations and more. These systems are easy to install and use. Also, using asset monitoring systems, warehouse monitoring and management becomes hassle-free.
Control Your Assets Using Asset Monitoring System
As technology has advanced, it is now easier to monitor assets and get their real-time information. It is highly beneficial for the business as it provides multiple benefits. Thus, if you are in a business where you need to control and manage assets or high-value assets, then you should opt for asset management systems.
